2018

I’ve seen a lot of people posting stories on instagram summing up 2018 with an array of photographs. I thought that instead of a story, I would right a well overdue blog post about my highs and lows of 2018 and a summary of what’s been happening in the last few months. I don’t necessarily want to sum up my 2018 travels here, but more hallmarks of discovery and moments that I will treasure for a long time.

2018 has been full of highs and lows and for me and a lot of self-discovery. I’ve lost one of my best friends to suicide but I have also overcome my own mental health issues and although this may sound insensitive, I know that he would be proud of me for finally getting to this point in my life, I only wish I could have been there to watch him get here too. But to dwell on something like this would not be a productive use of time and I know that looking over me, Conor wanted me to keep pushing forward and challenging myself. I made sure that this year was full of memories and saying yes to things I wouldn’t normally have said yes to.

At the beginning of the year, my boyfriend and I made our first game together: an exploration game called ‘The Drowned Forest’ and I taught myself how to 3D model on the computer. Had this been a few months earlier, the suggestion of making a game would probably have resulted in me laughing and replying with “I couldn’t do something like that”. But I did and it’s something I can genuinely say that I am proud of.

I made plenty of memories with my girlfriends this year which is something I struggled with in the past due to lack of motivation to go out and do things. For me, grad ball was one of the most memorable moments of 2018 and I’m so glad I got to share it with some lovely ladies.

Of course, in the summer, I visited Belgium and went to Rock Werchter festival. This was my first solo trip so it was extremely nerve-wracking but it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life so far and I met so many lovely girls from all over the world. This trip also gave me the confidence I needed to go interrailing by myself and although it didn’t turn out the way I expected, I don’t have any regrets. On top of this, I ticked skydiving off of my bucket list and managed to raise £850 for Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis, a charity very close to my heart!

After a long summer of beautiful countries and overwhelming experiences, I started my third year of university and admittedly went a bit AWOL from my blog. But, I worked hard and it paid off in the end. I also joined the Gaelic football team and tried a sport that I had never even heard of and I got to take part in a placement teaching biology in a secondary school! I even got to teach my first ever lesson to a class!

And after the semester was finished, I discovered that I truly have the best people in my life who all celebrated my 20th birthday with me by dressing up as icons from the past 20 years. I reunited with some of my best friends from school, my best friend got engaged and I spent some amazing time with my family and despite some difficult times in between, I can honestly say that 2018 has been the best so far.

In 2019 I hope to achieve some more goals and tick a few more things off my bucket list. After this year, I have some hard decisions to make about where I want to go in life and what I want to do but my boyfriend has recently taught me that there is no point in worrying about things that you cannot control and everything that happens, happens for a reason – something I aim to live by in the new year.

So I hope 2018 has been just as good to all of you and thank you all for still supporting this small and inconsistent blog of mine. See you next year.
